USA Cricket Academy: Where passion meets commitment
Sandipan Banerjee
January 8, 2015
SA Cricket Academy is the lone International Cricket Council (ICC) and USA Cricket Association (USACA) recognised cricket academy in America. Recently its U-17 and U-19 teams were in India to prepare for the upcoming Under-19 World Cup qualifiers.Sandipan Banerjee recently spent a day in the company of young American cricketers and excavates an untold tale.
A birthday cake shaped like a bat. Everybody cheering around it, egging on the birthday boy to aim for the ‘Sweet Spot’ with the knife. Thirty-four teenagers, eating, drinking, sleeping and playing cricket in various places of Gujarat for two weeks and talking in cricket jargons. Most interestingly, they are all the ambassadors of American cricket.
Cricket is a developing sport in USA. According to estimates, it is the home of around 200,000 weekend cricketers and 15 million fans. The game is spreading its wings slowly but steadily and metamorphosing from the status of a weekend sport to a professionalised setup. Most importantly, apart from appealing to the immigrants from the cricket playing nations, the sport has piqued the interest of the archetypal baseball-fanatic country. And USACA is the organisation that is making this happen.
The New Jersey-based academy was established in 1999 by Late Purshottam Patel. His dream was to spread the sport across; he wanted to see USA-born cricketers representing the country in international cricket. At present USACA is probably the best in the business; it helps that it also has the official recognition of USACA and ICC. Ashok Patel, son of Purshottam, is currently working on his father’s dream.
Since inception USACA has only dealt with the growth of youth cricket. Strengthening the base used to be priority. USACA won the global award from ICC in 2003 for their efforts in developing the sport at grass-root level. One of the main features of USACA is to conduct international tours for the youngsters with the aim to expose them to different kind of pitches. For the Under-17 or Under-19 boys this will be a huge opportunity to learn the nuances. In their recent tour the Under-17 and Under-19 teams came to India for an 18-day trip in the December 2014. This gave CricketCountry an opportunity to mingle with the contingent and find their approach towards this game.
The tour was supposed to be a preparation for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier in July 2015 in Bermuda. It provided an opportunity to the young guns to brush up their skills and gain experience and confidence through match practice on turf, which is a rarity back in US.
Discussing about the culture of cricket in America, Rahul Sharma, the Global Operations Manager of USACA said: “Cricket is the next big thing over there. Especially after the invention of Twenty20 format it has attracted many people. Give it some time, and Cricket will find a new destination in America.”
An international tour is a huge learning curve for any young cricketer. The initiative has to be appreciated. A smiling Rahul said, “We want to provide more playing and learning opportunities to our talented players in the different conditions of the world. That’s why we conduct these tours. This is probably the 12th or 13th tour we are organising since we have started the journey of this Academy. Keeping in mind the turning tracks of Bermuda for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier later this year, we have decided to tour India. So far I feel it has been an excellent choice. Before the event we will arrange another tour, probably in Guyana.”
“Funding for these tours has been a concern. But thanks to some sponsors and some generous parents, somehow we managed. Apart from the financial help, we also get warm receptions whenever we tour India.Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) provided us all kinds of support. They have arranged for good teams to play against us and have provided Ranji Trophy grounds to play the matches. We are really thankful to GCA and Gujarat government,” Rahul added.
Hitesh Patel, the former joint secretary of GCA was the manager of Indian team when Virat Kohli lifted the Under-19 world cup in 2007, was looking after the proceedings on behalf of the state association. He just laid the carpet for the Rahul an co. to give his boys the maximum exposure.
“This is a good initiative by the USA Cricket academy to tour Gujarat. Theses young cricketers will learn a lot from this kinds of tours. We just wanted provide them maximum help,” Patel said.
Amongst 34 young cricketers on the tour, most have played cricket only on matting wickets, barring pros like Derick Narine, Sagar Patel, Guranshu Sharma, and Sahil Patel. Narine, the 17 year old, is a Guyanese. He has played alongside Devendra Bishoo, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, and Kevon Cooper, and is probably the best cricketer on show on the tour. USA national selector Wesley King and USACA head coach Linden Fraser (former Guyanese fast bowler) rate him quite highly. He scored two centuries on the tour, took important wickets and has looked promising. However, he is yet to represent USA.
Top order batsmen Sagar and Guranshu and off-spinner Sahil have played for USA in age group cricket. They are expected to play key roles in the upcoming Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers. King has high hopes on the colts, especially Narine and Sahil. At this moment, however, he wanted the boys to focus on their games.
The contingent also had another name who has worked for the development of USA cricket throughout his life. JP Singh, the 68-year old former Guyanese military man, is the ‘discipline coach’ of the squads. Singh is the co-founder of USACA and a father figure of New York cricket of the new era. He has managed to include cricket in sports curriculum of at least 30 New York schools. According to him the sport has already attracted the kids and their parents. In near future cricket is expected to make its mark not only in New York but in the entire America.
However, there are still a few odds which American cricket has to overcome. William Perkins, who has played for West Indies Under-19s, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinidad & Tobago, is a USACA product. Lack of professionalism and money in USA cricket made him shift base to the Caribbean. If USA want to develop their cricket they should aim to preserve talents like him or Narine. The commendable work done by USACA will go down the drain otherwise.

Pioneer/Tristate loses to Suburbia by 46 runs as the “Sheriff “strikes again
JUNE-04-2015
USA Cricket: 16 year old Gauranshu Sharma scores century on debut in Metropolitan
JUNE-03-2015
Author Clifford Hinds www.tristatecricket.com
A NEW SHERIFF ARRIVES IN METRO TOWN
Sunday June 1st 2014 at High Noon, a new Sheriff arrived at the scheduled game between Pioneer/Tristate Cricket Club and Lions United Cricket Club which was to be played at Seaview Avenue and 80th Street. He was armed only with his cricket gears and accompanied by his bodyguard.
The story unfolds as Pioneer/Tristate’s captain; USA under 19 player, Omar Afridi won the toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bat. Of course, when the Sheriff is in town he always gets first choice. So it was no surprise when the captain called on former New York Region U/19 representative, left hand batsman, Lekhram Latchman and the Sheriff, 16 year old right hand batsman, Gauranshu Sharma to open the innings.
Lions countered with medium pacers Clint Wiseman and H. Douglas. Latchman did not last long as he drove with his head in the air and was caught at extra cover for 5 off Douglas with the score on 7.
Left hander, Horatio Paul next arrived at the wicket and immediately began to tear the bowling apart, reaching his fifty in ridiculously quick time. In the meantime, young Sharma, playing in his first league game, was stroking the ball beautifully and he too reached a well-played fifty. He played almost every stroke and like so many great players, rarely hit the ball in the air. He is a beautiful driver of the ball and a master of the cover drive.
Paul, at times, batted as if it was he who invented the game and was a joy to watch. He had just reached his century to tremendous applause when he was given out stumped for exactly 100 runs. It was a magnificent inning and included 8 fours and 3 sixes. The partnership was worth 174 runs and the score was 181 for 2. President, John Mitchell, Coach, Linden Fraser, Technical Director, Clifford Hinds, Rahul Sharma and Mrs. Mirza could not control their enthusiasm as the inning unfolded.
The next batsman was Cameron Mirza, former USA under 19 and current English league player. The pyrotechnics continued. Cameron batted with increasing authority reflecting fine attacking strokes with flawless defense. He played with great elegance and fluency and after he had reached fifty, his race to the century mark was only interrupted by his effort to give Sharma the strike so that he could complete his century. These batsmen were taking no prisoners and soon after, Sharma entered the record books of the Metropolitan Cricket League and the New York Region by completing his century on debut.
When the game was called after 37 overs, Sharma was not out on 111 with 9 fours and Mirza 61 not out with 8 fours. The pair had put on 149 runs as the batting team ended with 323 for 2 wickets.
After being battered in the field, no one expected Lions to make a strong reply, and they were right. After being down 55 runs for 8 wickets, they were finally bowled out for 131 in 26 overs. Bill Waysome top scored with 24 not out and Clint Wiseman scored 17 as Youdgesh Ganesh bowled with guile and fire to claim 5 for 19 in 7 overs. New York Region under 17 candidates, Chetram “Mario” Persaud bowled well to take 2 for 26 in 4.1 overs. As of press time, the pundits were still checking the archives to see if Sharma is the youngest player to score a century in the league.
The next game is against Suburbia C.C. at Gateway and Pioneer/Tristate will be without the services of Omar Afridi who will be spending the summer in England on a medical internship. He has our prayers and best wishes.
Ashok Patel - Hands on cricket donor with grassroots philosophy
Apr 08, 2009
By Peter Simunovich
Ashok Kumar P. Patel loves his cricket. He knows the game and has played it at close to the top level in England. He also sees the future of the game in the United States mushrooming if it is nurtured from grass roots level.
Patel, 47, is passionate about his belief in developing the game with players at an early age. For years he has been vocal about his thoughts with anyone who cares to talk to him about the game.
But he goes one step further than most when it comes to backing up his words or following his dream. He puts his money where his mouth is.
Almost a decade ago, Patel founded the USA Cricket Academy in Old Bridge, New Jersey, to help in the development of youngsters from eight to 19 to play the game with proper coaching, instructions and advice.
The academy is located on seven acres of land with nets and a field exclusively used for cricket even though it is known as Pension Rd. Soccer Field, simply because it was a soccer ground before Patel took it over. The academy has six coaches, nets and a matting pitch, which will be replaced in mid April by Astro Turf.
Patel is one of the coaches and he is happy to pass on his past playing experiences and advice to the youngsters for free. Since he began the academy 30 players have represented the US national team at different age groups.
It is a very good strike rate even in a sport that is way down the list of popularity in the US. Patel, who moved here from England with his family in 1988, has a history of conquering difficulties.
He was born in Uganda, but his family was evicted by the Idi Amin regime and it was forced to relocate to England.
Patel, a manager of several small family businesses, was a groundsman with the MCC in London between 1980 and 1983. In effect he was an apprentice cricketer and in dressing room duties he remembers cleaning the boots of players, including the great Sunil Gavaskar.
Patel elevated himself from groundsman to a No. 7 batsman and opening medium fast bowler with the Essex County side second XI. He also played for four years with the South Woodford in the Essex League.
It was all solid grounding for his coming role in the US. When he first moved here he decided he would not play because he did not want to block any youngster from competing.
"When I came here I studied the structure of cricket and in 1999 I told the ICC that the only way the game would succeed is starting at grass roots level," he told DreamCricket.com.
Patel remembers thinking how the US team looked like a senior citizens or dad's army combination. The fitness of the team was questionable. While two players - current captain Steve Massiah was one of them - were in their teens while the rest were made up of players in their 30s and some as old as 45.
He had a vision that grass roots level was the way to go and he began his academy, which was recognized by the ICC in 2001 and the following two years he received awards for development of youth cricket - around the globe and in the Americas region.
The academy now has a senior team that plays as the Old Bridge Cricket Club in the Garden State League and as the USA Cricket Academy in the Cricket League of New Jersey.
Over the years, Patel estimates he has poured about $500,000 into his academy, coaching, sponsoring teams, paying fares, accommodation and buying uniforms in international competition and developing his field in New Jersey. It is all about cultivating youth, grooming them from grass roots level to be ready for first class competition.
"I have always maintained that we should stop older players from competing. We need younger ones coming through. I am 100 percent behind this. The future is in these youngsters. We have to motivate them," he said. "Sponsors will come if you develop youth."
Patel believes USACA is now heading in the right direction, but he is still sensitive to some past paid appointments where the job was not performed satisfactorily. However, he praised volunteers for making themselves available virtually 24 hours a day.
"I would like to continue to work with USACA and Don Lockerbie (new CEO). I am happy to work alongside him if he wants my services," he said.
Over the years Patel has a long and distinguished association with junior teams: In 2003 he took a Under 13 team to Barbados, four Under 18 teams to Trinidad, Under 15 and Under 19 teams to Wales, four Under 19 teams to the Sir Garfield Sobers tournaments in Barbados, the Under 19 US team to India and Sri Lanka in 2006, last year he took the USA Cricket Academy Under 19 team to India and the Under 13 and Under 15 teams to Florida for an ICC endorsed tournament.
The 14-player U19 team, which went to India and Sri Lanka three years ago, was made up of 12 players from his USA Academy, a testament to his grass roots philosophy.
Patel is very much hands on. In one tournament he flew in overnight matting and with the help of players he rolled up his sleeves and laid it down in time for the first day's play.
His latest venture is negotiating with Australian grade clubs to have his players compete with them to gather more experience and eventually help the US.
So far his grass roots philosophy is paying off handsomely.
